Girlie Drink of the Week

28 Apr

I know it doesn’t feel like it in parts of our country, but we are well into Spring and some of us are enjoying temperatures to match. Today’s offering is a simple twist on a classic.

greyhound cocktail

The Greyhound

  • 2 oz. Vodka
  • 5 oz. Grapefruit juice
  • Grapefruit slices for garnish (optional)

Pour ingredients into a shaker filled with ice and shake gently. Strain into a highball glass over ice, and garnish with a grapefruit slice. I prefer Ruby Red grapefruit juice since it is sweeter. If using herbs to garnish like rosemary or basil (don’t knock it), use regular grapefruit juice. Either way, this will keep you cool when the weather finally decides to cooperate ๐Ÿ™‚

Girlie Drink of the Week

9 Mar

Considering the viewership here, I am seriously thinking of changing the title to “Cocktail of the Week”. Maybe then the gents would be more apt to try it. But for now, it’s still a girlie drink, even though it features bourbon. Or maybe because of it.

tea breeze cocktail

Tea Breeze

  • 6 oz. chilled sweet tea (sweet to your taste)
  • 8 mint leaves, plus one sprig for garnish
  • ยผ oz. fresh lemon juice (Meyer, if you can get it)
  • 1 ยฝ oz. peach schnapps
  • 1 oz. Maker’s Mark (or bourbon of choice)

Pour and place all ingredients in an ice-filled shaker. Shake well, and pour into a tall glass over ice. Garnish with the mint sprig.

Usually, I tell y’all that garnish is very optional. But not so with mint. Mint is awesome, and the mo, the bettah. So sprig away your doctored tea, and hopefully that will ease your transition into Daylight Savings ๐Ÿ˜‰

Three Posts for the Price of One

26 Feb

Sorry I have been remiss in posting the usual eye candy and funneh and vitriolic politic. The past two weeks have been hectic, but I am happy to announce all of my drama has been resolved. At least until March 7th. Then the cycle of drama is sure to begin again, Finnegan. So here are three posts to catch up on this blarg.

Bimbos Be Bitching

Last Sunday the Oscars were presented. I don’t watch it anymore, simply because it’s a preening contest involving people who are paid to project fantasy, voted on by the same, and applauded by themselves. Patricia Arquette (full disclosure: I have seen only one of her movies, “Stigmata”) won for something, don’t know what nor do I care, and then proceeded to bitch about pay equality and women’s rights. This from a multimillionaire. Meryl Streep and J Lo were cheering her on. That from multimillionaires.

patricia arquette lol

You want to impress me? Then get paid scale and stop wearing designer shit that the women you seek to empower can’t afford. Oh, and while you’re at it, do away with ALL the perks that women in the work force enjoy, like maternity leave. Make them equal, and let’s see how much they love you.

Girlie Drink of the Week, Men’s Edition

3 Feb

I’m not sure if an apostrophe is needed in the title. I shall rely on my usual defense and say, English is my second language. Anyway, today’s offering is a manly drink that gals can also enjoy. Not too foofie, and not to “oh em gee my throat is on fire”.

bourbon smash

Bourbon Smash

  • ยพ oz. simple syrup
  • mint sprigs
  • lemon wedges
  • 2 oz. bourbon

Take about eight mint leaves, three lemon wedges and the simple syrup, and muddle them with a spoon in a cocktail shaker until the lemons are pretty smooshed. Add the bourbon and ice, and stir until cold (don’t shake, since it would really break down the mint too much). Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. For garnish, take a mint leaf and rub between fingers gently to release the oils, and add to the drink.

This is a great alternative to wine. Don’t judge me ๐Ÿ˜€

Girlie Drink of the Week

13 Jan

Sorry for running late but apparently it is my turn to come down with something. At this time I would like to thank my children for making sure I got sick after the holidays. It was very considerate of them. My father only drinks gin when he is feeling a cold or flu coming on. He swears by it. I am not one to question his wisdom, so in that vein, I give you this week’s Girlie Drink.

elderflower sour

Elderflower Sour

  • 1 oz. Gin (Bombay Sapphire)
  • 1 oz. Elderflower liqueur (St. Germain)
  • ยฝ oz. Fresh lemon juice
  • ยฝ oz. Simple syrup
  • Lemon twist for garnish

Pour all ingredients except the twist into a shaker filled with ice. Shake well, and strain into a coupe, or rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with the twist.

Personally, I prefer drinking this from a coupe (the glass, not the car). That way it doesn’t get diluted ๐Ÿ˜€

Have a great Tuesday!!

Girlie Drink of the Week

6 Jan

We peasants took a well-deserved break this past holiday. Sure, Iย  know y’allย missed the Thursday Random and I’m here to tell y’all it will be back this week!! Until then, have a drink to celebrate the start of a new year.

  • 2 oz. Vodka
  • 2 oz. Pomegranate juice
  • Champagne
  • Gold sugar and gold leaf, for garnish (optional)

Pour vodka and juice into an ice-filled shaker and shake well. Strain into a sugar-rimmed coupe or goblet. Top off with a splash of champagne and sprinkle gold leaf if that’s your thing. Personally, plain sugar will do and in this economy you are better off using sparkling wine and skipping the gold leaf. And that’s called having champagne taste on a beer budget ๐Ÿ˜‰

Holiday Drink of the Week

16 Dec

For some reason, my youngest loves to watch the Food Network. She loves Chopped, Cutthroat Kitchen, Cupcake Wars, etc. But one of the fun ones is The Kitchen. I like it too, because it gives you easy recipes, entertainment ideas, and best of all a “Five O’Clock Somewhere” segment. Wheeeeee!!!!

rudolph cocktail

Rudolph’s Cranberry Antlers

5 cranberries

3 sprigs fresh rosemary

3/4 ounce maple syrup

2 ounces gin

3/4 ounce cranberry juice

3/4 ounce sweet vermouth

Splash Champagne

1 marshmallow

2 cloves

Muddle 4 of the cranberries and 1 of the rosemary sprigs with the maple syrup in a shaker. Add the gin, cranberry juice and vermouth and vigorously shake with ice. Strain into a chilled saucer or martini glass. Top with a splash of champagne.

To create the garnish, just use the remaining rosemary sprigs for the antlers, cloves for the eyes, and the last cranberry for the nose. Or do as I would: eat the marshmallow as a chaser ๐Ÿ˜€

Girlie Drink of the Week

7 Oct

So this past week I was out of town attending my nephew’s wedding. It was fun and we all had a great time, but it was also a bit tiring. I’m just not cut out to drink and stay up past two in the morning. Ok, not cut out to stay up so late.

tequila spritzer

Tequila Spritzer

  • 1ยฝ oz. Silver tequila
  • Lime soda
  • Sparkling water
  • Garnish of choice (optional)

Rim a glass with sugar and add ice. Pour tequila over ice, then add the soda, followed by the sparkling water to taste (more soda for sweeter). Garnish with a tree (rosemary) or with limes or with cucumber slices. Or don’t. Y’all tend to be picky about that crap. Just drink it, and enjoy the fact that maybe Summer temperatures are coming to an end. Maybe ๐Ÿ˜‰

Girlie Drink of the Week

30 Sep

Hopefully I won’t get derided for this one, since it has gin.

cuke rosemary GnT

Cucumber Rosemary Gin & Tonic

  • Cucumber
  • Lime
  • Sprigs of rosemary
  • 2 oz. Gin (I like Rangpur by Tanqueray)
  • 4 oz. Tonic water

Peel one half of a cucumber, and slice a lime into eight wedges. In a highball glass, add three slices of peeled cucumber, 1 sprig rosemary, juice from a lime wedge and 1 ounce gin. Muddle with the back of a spoon.

Strain through a mesh strainer into a second highball glass. Add several cubes of ice, and three slices of unpeeled cucumber. Top with remaining gin and tonic, and serve garnished with rosemary sprigs. Om nom nom nom …. ๐Ÿ˜€
