Carnation Milk 65 Years Ago.

3 Apr

A little old lady from Wisconsin had worked in and around her family dairy farms since she was old enough to walk, with hours of hard work and little compensation.
When canned Carnation Milk became available in grocery stores in the 1940s, she read an advertisement offering $5,000 for the best slogan. The producers wanted a rhyme beginning With ‘Carnation Milk is best of all.’
She thought to herself, I know everything there is to know about milk and dairy farms. I can do this!
She sent in her entry, and several weeks later, a black car pulled up in front of her house. A large man got out, knocked on her door and said, “Ma’am,…..The president of Carnation milk absolutely LOVED your entry…..So much, in fact, that we are here to award you $1,000 even though we will not be able to use it for our advertisements!”
He did, however, have one printed up to hang on his office wall.
True story (supposedly, but not according to Snopes.com)

WI women do just say it as it is 🙂

Did you guys hear about the 80 year WI woman who had to land a plane with no experience because her 81 year old husband fell unconscious(and died, sad part of story) and she had to take over.

Quite a story, lizard. Amazing she could do that.

After being around family this last weekend, I can see there’s a lot of tough women, all around.

Who the fuck is that turd, J’Ames?

  8. Jay in Ames April 3, 2012 at 10:43 am #

He’s a professor at Columbia, always on Red Eye.

So an easy mark for Gutfeld, then 😉

  10. Jay in Ames April 3, 2012 at 10:50 am #

He’s actually funny and tolerable on Red Eye. But he will go off on far left rants.

I’ve seen him on OReilly before, too. Bill lets him get away with a lot.

It’s one thing to go off an a leftist rant, and quite another to keep fanning the flames of a boiling situation like that.

  12. Jay in Ames April 3, 2012 at 11:06 am #

According to what has been in the media, what he said was pretty much true.

  13. LC Aggie Sith April 3, 2012 at 11:29 am #

I rely on the media like I rely on Amtrak™….

  14. Jay in Ames April 3, 2012 at 11:34 am #

    Very true, very true.

But Sheriff Joe still relies on Amtrak, after all.

Weather sirens going off – apparently we’re under a Tornado Watch until 8 p.m. CST.

The Boy was somewhat concerned – I had to explain what the “chances” of actually seeing one in this part of the city are…..

He’s such a sweetie – earlier today, he dragged DD#3 outside to finish up some gardening that we started over the weekend.

They were so excited, because they thought they had hit the motherlode of onions. They brought them inside, washed them off, and proudly showed them to me.

They were crestfallen when I told them they were daffodil bulbs…..

(Happily, though, they have now been transplanted – woo-hoo!)

OK, now THAT’S some quality garden humor.

Crap – just got a call that tornadoes touched down near Rebecca’s school; the freeways are messed up around there as well.

Can’t get through to the school, but am monitoring the local station.

For now, I think they’re OK.

Wall cloud reported near The Ballpark in Arlington.

Looks like there is lots of bad stuff coming in from the west – bearing down on us right now….

  21. Jay in Ames April 3, 2012 at 3:10 pm #

Whew, stay safe! I’d say go to the basement, but that’s not a southern thing, is it?

  22. LC Aggie Sith April 3, 2012 at 3:17 pm #

    Prayers to you, Teresa.

My brother called and told me two touched down in Dallas.

  23. Jay in Ames April 3, 2012 at 3:17 pm #

Say a prayer for Dick. Sounds like he got hit in the storm, tree hit his house.

  24. LC Aggie Sith April 3, 2012 at 3:18 pm #

    Will do, J’ames.

Now you know why I don’t go there any more.

OH CRAP – just saw the nursing home that is across the street from Becca’s school on the news. Part of the building is gone.

Helicopter didn’t pull back, so I’m assuming the school is OK (it’s a very small building).

Damage to nursing home is on the far side of the building.

The school isn’t answering their phone; power is out across Arlington, so they may not have a working landline at this time.

  27. Jay in Ames April 3, 2012 at 3:23 pm #

TiFW too, building across the street from Rebecca’s school got hit.

    Sounds ugly.

    Only Dick 😀

I called him, and so far he’s doing ok. Kelly is safe, too. I pray Rebecca and her school are ok, Teresa, as are the nursing home residents.

  30. Lizard April 3, 2012 at 3:38 pm #

@TiFW I hope all is well. I just was checking in the news and immediately thought of you and a few others I know living around there. I hope and pray Becca’s school is safe and she is doing ok.

  31. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX April 3, 2012 at 3:54 pm #

Looks like the worst is past Fort Worth; there’s still some bad stuff near Becca’s school (new tornado warning – rain-wrapped).

The lady who picks them up is on her way over there now (school lets out in 15 minutes).

The really bad stuff is now to the east and north.

Minor injuries reported at the Green Oaks Nursing Home; I guess they got all of the patients out of the area before it got hit.

    Rebecca hates thunderstorms…..

  32. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX April 3, 2012 at 4:08 pm #

Apparently the tornado lifted up right before it got to Rebecca’s school; they are currently evacuating the nursing home.

Thanks for your thoughts – much appreciated…..

  33. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX April 3, 2012 at 4:11 pm #

Becca is on her way home.

  34. LC Aggie Sith April 3, 2012 at 4:17 pm #

    Oh, thank goodness, Teresa!!

I heard Cleburne got hit pretty bad, though.

  35. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX April 3, 2012 at 4:26 pm #

Here’s an old Google Earth map of Becca’s school – the school building is the smaller one at the bottom of the page; the end of the NE corner of the larger building is basically gone:

(One of the other moms said that God had his hand all over that school building…..)

Here’s an overhead view of the damage to the nursing home; LOTS of houses just north of the school are severely damaged:

  38. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX April 3, 2012 at 4:47 pm #

Rebecca is now home – apparently the kids at the school thought they were having a party; she couldn’t be bothered to give me a hug….. 😛

  39. LC Aggie Sith April 3, 2012 at 5:14 pm #

HAHAHAHA!!! Glad to hear she’s unaffected, Teresa.

And how dead on is Miller??

  40. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX April 3, 2012 at 5:36 pm #

Only 1 minor injury at the Nursing Home – the part of the bldg that was hit is the rehab area, so no “rooms” there, thank goodness.

Sounds like all of the residents will be relocated by this evening – glad they are all OK.

  41. LC Aggie Sith April 3, 2012 at 5:40 pm #

Seeing the videos coming in, I pray that casualties are minimal to non-existent.

  42. Lizard April 3, 2012 at 6:12 pm #

Glad Becca is all right and didn’t seem to notice. Hopefully there are no major injuries anywhere.

  43. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX April 3, 2012 at 7:26 pm #

So far – and amazingly enough – only a few minor injuries have been reported. Which, when you see pictures of all of the damage, is truly a miracle….

Just got this in our e-mail:

    Dear Families & Staff,

We are very grateful – God put His hand on our little school this afternoon! As many of you already know, the nursing home across the street had extensive damage and they evacuated the residents. We may have some roof damage from the hail, but were virtually untouched by the tornado that literally passed by two houses down.

We know people were praying for us this afternoon – God heard those prayers! All of our students and staff, in all three of our locations (GOS, GOAL and the store) were in safe areas during the storms.

We had only one student who was a little upset, but it was because I told him we couldn’t tell ghost stories when the lights went out! Our staff was amazing and kept our students calm and occupied. We were unaware that a tornado was passing by!

    Huh.

If Mr. Obama had a son, he could look like either one of these choirboys…..

    That’s an awesome letter, Teresa!!

And those kids? Yeah, they are very close to what Obama spawn would be.
