Because I’m a giver……

21 Aug

….and I haven’t put up a post in awhile, I’m gonna copy yesterday’s post from my blog. Yeah, I’m lazy…..

Dude - my beautiful wickedness is melting.....

Honestly, I can’t remember a summer this hot in Texas. I mean, we were here in 1980 – that brutal summer of 2 solid months of 100+ degree temperatures – but these past few weeks have been ridiculously scorching. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a weather report where every temperature for the week was expected to be AT LEAST 104 degrees – and we’ve had at least 2 weeks of forecasts like that, with another one planned for this week.

Ah, well – here’s some summertime music to soothe the savage breast. I’ve been staying indoors with the A/C turned down and the ceiling fans turned up….

Let’s start out “Old School” with a catchy little classic from Nat King Cole (you’ll have to click on the link to watch on YouTube; sorry!):

.

.

While we’re on a trip down Memory Lane, here’s a really cute arrangement (one-man!) of an old classic:

.

.

Next, we’ll go with a hippy-dippy peppy little tune from Mungo Jerry:

.

.

Continuing with the “hippie” era, we have The Loving Spoonful (I couldn’t find any good videos with a summertime theme, so here’s Brucey, Sammy, and Jeremy getting “dirt’ and gritty” instead):

.

.

And everyone knows that it wouldn’t be summertime without a tune from the Beach Boys (this one will also have to be watched by clicking on the link to YouTube):

.

.

Okay, I’ve had enough summer for this year – I can haz cold weather now?

C'mon, winter!

[Bonus track for you classical music lovers out there]

Here’s something a little different – one of the most beautiful arrangements of “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess” that I have ever heard. This isn’t your “traditional” summertime music, but it is certainly relaxing on a hot summer afternoon:

    Morning all!!

High in the low to mid 80’s here today. Sunny sky, nice breeze … yeah it is nice weather right now in the midwest. But ya’ll in Texas need to get your knickers out of a knot! Come Dec, Jan, Feb, when you are dealing with 30’s, 40’s, and above, We will be dealing with between one to four feet of snow (at any given time, from any given storm) with temps maybe reaching into the 30’s, and more likely staying well below zero.

    It all balances out.

  12. LC Aggie Sith August 21, 2011 at 11:43 am #

J’Ames, I love your news digs!

And shut up about the temps.

    You too, Guy 😛

Okay, off your asses. Get up and move it!

I believe the movie that video was associated with was “Die Hard with a Vengeance”, Aggie.

And Guy – that “Strut” video reminded me of a great story:

Some friends of ours used to always go on a skiing vacation once a year. They would usually carpool up from Fort Worth to some place that they had picked out. They rented a condo, and being engineers, they would have big planning meetings to figure out the best route to take, how long the drive would be, what they were going to make for meals – they even had a big “shopping event” where they would put together a grocery list and get all of that stuff a couple of days before the big trip.

Well, one year the “elder” of the group (he’s about 20 years older than the rest of us) was driving one of the cars. He’s a widower, and that year he was absolutely ENTRANCED by Sheena Easton’s “Strut”. This was in the days before CD players, so he made a continuous cassette tape recording with nothing but “Strut” on it.

He played it A LOT on that trip. So much so, that to this day, everyone remembers it, and tales are still told about “The Road Trip from Hell”, and those poor souls who were unfortunate enough to be riding in his car on the long drive up and back.

I think I’ll e-mail that video to all of them this morning……

  15. Jay in Ames August 21, 2011 at 12:25 pm #

Strut, Pout, Put it out, that’s what you want from women.

    Sheena seems angry about this.

  16. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX August 21, 2011 at 12:38 pm #

Here’s another one that I really like from that era (and TRUST ME – you don’t want to see the “uncensored” version; it’s one step above gay porn….):

  17. Jay in Ames August 21, 2011 at 12:43 pm #

Seen that one, TiFW, and you are correct!

Long joke over at my place, too long to paste here. Love pilot humor!

  18. Jay in Ames August 21, 2011 at 12:48 pm #

Thanks for the compliment, Aggie. That theme seems to fit.

  19. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX August 21, 2011 at 12:54 pm #

Then, there’s the “movie” version from “Body Double” (which is where I heard it the first time…..) –

  20. LC Aggie Sith August 21, 2011 at 12:58 pm #

    Sheena seems angry about this.

    Hm…she sure does. Wonder why?

  21. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX August 21, 2011 at 1:02 pm #

Cute story at your place, Jay – I passed it along!

  22. LC Aggie Sith August 21, 2011 at 1:03 pm #

Teresa, there ain’t no Bruce film I haven’t seen 😉

  24. GuyS August 21, 2011 at 1:07 pm #

    Sheena seems angry about this.

And yet she is wearing an amazingly short skirt/culot … strutting her stuff as it were. Perhaps it is the conflict of interest? Or not enough chocolate.

  25. Jay in Ames August 21, 2011 at 1:11 pm #

    Obviously a male director, Guy.

  26. GuyS August 21, 2011 at 1:19 pm #

Jay, had it been a “real” male director, and not one of those “artsie-fartsie” types, she would have been in a translucent baby doll, with her legs, arms, and upper body lightly oiled…soft candle light providing just the right mood….

  27. LC Aggie Sith August 21, 2011 at 1:24 pm #

    There’s never enough chocolate.

  28. Jay in Ames August 21, 2011 at 1:38 pm #

Guy, I would like to subscribe to your newsletter. Not that PG rated one, either. I want the director’s cut.

  29. GuyS August 21, 2011 at 1:47 pm #

Jay, I think I am going to start moonlighting as a writer of letters to Penthouse.

  30. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX August 21, 2011 at 2:42 pm #

Jay, thanks for the link to that video – how great that was to see!

One of my favorites is the Chicago air traffic control section. DAL would be Delta Airlines, I think.

    “DAL1176, say speed.”
“DAL1176, we slowed it down to two-twenty.”
“DAL1176 pick it back up to two-fifty…this ain’t Atlanta, and them ain’t grits on the ground.”

  35. Jay in Ames August 21, 2011 at 5:36 pm #

    Nice one.

I scheduled a poat for the morning. Had some inspiration, so I acted on it.

Don’t get your hopes up, it’s silly.

    Story: SR-71 Pilots Show Off

One day, high above Arizona, we were monitoring the radio traffic of all the mortal airplanes below us.
First, a Cessna pilot asked the air traffic controllers to check his ground speed. “Ninety knots” ATC replied.
A twin Bonanza soon made the same request. “One-twenty on the ground” was the reply.
To our surprise, a navy F-18 came over the radio with a ground speed check. I knew exactly what he was doing. Of course, he had a ground speed indicator in his cockpit, but he wanted to let all the bug-smashers in the valley know what real speed was. “Dusty 52, we show you at 620 on the ground” ATC responded.
The situation was too ripe. I heard the click of Walter’s mike button in the rear seat. In his most innocent voice, Walter startled the controller by asking for a ground speed check from 81,000 feet, clearly above controlled airspace. In a cool, professional voice, the controller replied, “Aspen 20, I show you at 1,982 knots on the ground.”

We did not hear another transmission on that frequency all the way to the coast.

  37. roamingfirehydrant August 21, 2011 at 5:55 pm #

Hahahahahahaha, I love that one, too, Jay.

There. That’s 15 minutes of your life that you’ll never get back.

    You’re welcome.

I don’t read that slow unless I’m reading C.S. Lewis.
And then only because I’m a dummy, and have really work at understanding him fully.

    So, it’s a reading staycation?
