Obligatory Friday Night Poat

29 Apr

First things first.  Our favorite Roaming Fire Hydrant is a-ok.  This calls for a Happy Dance.

Next, our team of crack researchers…

…are trying to figure out the mystery of evocative songs.

What is an evocative song you ask?  Well, you came to the right place to get your learnin’ on, dummy.  An evocative song is one that can come on, and take you away, to a different place, a different time, or a different attitude, so your mission, whether or not you choose to accept it, is to try to poat a link to at least one such song for you, and explain why.  I’ll go first, because I’m a rude, thoughtless, callous SOB who doesn’t give a damn about your fragile feelings, and because I can.

First up, Gordon Lightfoot’s Sundown.

Yes.  I know you don’t think he’s cool.  You can be wrong, and we can agree to disagree.  After all, a lot of you like the saccarine-sweet sounds of The Carpenters, so what do you know from good music?  Anyway, I hear that guitar and bass line, and I am immediately transported back to the 70s, when I was still a child, and for some reason, I think of wood panelling, and the odor of stale cigarettes.  And for some reason, that is like comfort food for my brain.  I can’t tell you why.

Next, Misguided Angel, by the Cowboy Junkies.

Ok, even if I didn’t harbor a secret crush on Margo Timmins, this song would still be one of my favorites.  When I first heard this song, I closed my eyes and let this song wrap around me like a warm blanket, and rock me gently as it lifted me from the bounds of Earth.  Even today, it still has that effect if I close my eyes.  The year after this album came out, I made a pilgrimage to the Church of the Holy Trinity, to the organ loft where this album was recorded.  For me, it was like making a trip to Sun Studios is for Elvis fans.

And then there is one of several Chris Issak songs that has this effect, Can’t Do A Thing To Stop Me.

I swear, I’m floating on a calm lake on a soft summer evening when I hear this.  Even if this guy couldn’t sing, I could still listen to him and the band play.

Now its your turn, slackers.  Don’t disappoint me.

Uh, that was the only song title I spotted in BiW’s post that wasn’t linked to a song already.

  10. LC Aggie Sith April 29, 2011 at 10:35 pm #

Oh, so I did the commenting wrong.

    Sigh…

  11. Blackiswhite, Imperial Consigliere April 29, 2011 at 10:37 pm #

Here’s another good one, even if the retard who posted it doesn’t have a clue that the album was released well before 2006.

I listen to this, and I’m driving on a lonely dark two lane blacktop in the Northern Lower Pennisula of Michigan on a hot and sticky summer night, with heat lighting in place of the guitar on this track. Haunting and awesome at the same time.

Would it matter if I said yes?

  29. GuyS April 29, 2011 at 11:22 pm #

Don’t know too many folks who wore the uniform who didn’t like the above song (especially us old retired farts). Every time I hear it, I remember heading out on some deployment or another, usually via Military Airlift Command (MAC flights!! … wonder how old the chicken is in the box lunch this time!) … Yeah, that one always evokes memories, both the sweet and bitter sweet varieties.

This was playing on the radio (prob WLS “the ROCK of Chicago”) when I boarded the train heading to do the finial swearing in at the MEPS center. and off to Basic Training. Have always thought of this as my “going into the Navy song”, and usually will bring back a memory or two of a snot nosed kid leaving the nest to take his first swing at life.

There are other songs and bits of music which can pant a picture, but these two will do for a start.

Sox is best served warm and fuzzy on a nice scrunchy blanket on my ottoman next to Aggie.

    Fixeted.

A belated “good night Dick” from the hinterlands. And the comment with songs has to be moderated? (Just curious)

  48. LC Aggie Sith April 30, 2011 at 12:02 am #

WP has been trapping PattyAnn. I decided to stay logged in and check in on the spam periodically.

It’s sad that you’re reduced to being here with me.

  53. LC Aggie Sith April 30, 2011 at 12:15 am #

Unfortunately, my headache won’t go away, so I better try to sleep a bit. Have a goodnight, Brad.
