Yeah, it feels like one of those nights…

Let’s kick it off with a little Wilson Pickett:

And a little more, because I can.

And a little Sam and Dave:

And some old Chicago for the lurvely PA:

And a little something for Aggie:

(I prefer the Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels version from the sixties, but you can’t find it on youtube).

Ha ha ha … Zelda over in Treacher’s comments:

eminds me of the best April Fool’s joke I ever played:

Daughter 1 (having no possible way of knowing this): Mom! One of grandma and grandpa’s horses died!

    Me: Oh no! Which one?!

    Daughter 1: Hahahahahahahahahaha! APRIL FOOL!!!!!

    A short time later…

Daughter 2: Mom! There’s a dead deer on the side of the road and vultures are picking at its eyes!!!

    Me: Ew! Where?!

    Daughter 2: Hahahahahahahahahaha! APRIL FOOL!!!!!

    Yet still later…

Me: Girls, I have to talk to you very seriously. Your father and I love you very much, but we have decided to get divorced. You’ll need to think about who you want to live with.

Daughters 1 & 2: Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! No, no PLEASE don’t get divorced. PLEASE! COME HOME, DADDY. PLEASE!

Me: Hahahahahahahaha! APRIL FOOL!!!! Stop crying. It was just a joke. Kidding. See? Kidding. Daddy’s just late from work. Stop crying. Please stop crying….

    Yeah, don’t screw with me.

    Good morning, Aggie!

Found out at 9:30 about a makeup baseball game at 11:00, be there at 10:15. Wha?

  15. LC Aggie Sith April 2, 2011 at 10:57 am #

    Ha!

Had the same thing happen when little one was in soccer. Had a make-up game at 8 AM, and we had to be there at 6:45 AM.

    I never did understand why.

  16. roamingfirehydrant April 2, 2011 at 11:03 am #

This was just out of the blue. I guess because they had so many games rained out, they are scrambling to make some up. A little more notice would have been nice.

  17. LC Aggie Sith April 2, 2011 at 11:08 am #

The coach called the night before, so I should have been thankful for the heads-up, but 6 fucking 45 in the morning? To stand there looking like idiotic green zebras??

And did I mention we were the first game???

It is no wonder we decided to go with another league.

  18. MCPO Airdale April 2, 2011 at 12:14 pm #

OK, someone help me here. . . How does a booming population cause a reduction in gas tax receipts in Tejas? Are all of the new people required to walk or use highspeed rail?

  19. Dick April 2, 2011 at 12:28 pm #

Chief, a lot of people being counted are wetbacks who crossed the border on foot, and piss poor and broke families who move to Texas and only have one car, or less.

  20. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX April 2, 2011 at 12:33 pm #

…a $170 billion gap between the amount of money that needs to be invested in transportation to keep commutes from getting worse and the amount of money the state expects to bring in from federal freeway funds, the gasoline tax and vehicle registration fees between 2011 and 2035.

It’s not that the gas tax receipts are less, it’s that the WANTS are more. Who knows if they are including just construction/repair or if they are including the salaries of state workers, etc. They may also be projecting expected regulatory costs.

Chances are that they are also expecting the price of everything to remain high if Democrats stay in power in Washington – Obama HATES Texas and her steadfastly fierce refusal to dance to his tune, and he is punishing us accordingly. It’s possible that they are planning to rely on fewer federal funds – hard in the short term, but ultimately better for the state and her people in the long term.

  21. PattyAnn April 2, 2011 at 12:37 pm #

MCPO, I was asking myself that same thing. But, then again, our booming population pays next to nothing for real estate taxes (most live 3 to 4+ families per house) and most don’t pay for things like vehicle inspections or insurance or driver’s licenses.
I know it’s Federal, but how much SS tax comes out of cash labor?

  22. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX April 2, 2011 at 12:44 pm #

There are toll roads in parts of Texas that “parallel” existing freeways. Depending on where we are and the time of day, there are times when we make a very conscious choice to pay the toll, just to cut down on the headache of the traffic/congestion.

As long as we have those CHOICES, I’m fine with paying a toll. If it becomes a MANDATE, I’m gonna be pissed.

We just discovered the toll road that goes around Austin – a city that boomed so fast that the freeways weren’t able to keep up. When we drive to visit Mr. TiFW’s family, we just detour onto the toll road and zip past all of the traffic.

I just wish they’d make a toll road that cut the driving time between Fort Worth and San Antonio – it could be a much shorter straight shot. I think the I-35 corridor probably follows close to a lot of rivers, which made a lot of sense when people were driving cattle on horseback, but not so much now that we have cars…

Teresa, I put out $1300 last year in toll road fees.
Why? Because the toll road happens to be the way to get there.
Fuck toll roads and Rick Perry’s mother.

I know it’s Federal, but how much SS tax comes out of cash labor?

    Zip. Zero. Nada.

If it’s off the books, it’s as if the employee doesn’t exist.

How much SS/Medicaid taxes do we take out for the kid down the street to mow the lawn or babysit our kids? They don’t pay federal tax on that either. For tiny stuff like that, it’s not a big deal (don’t think politicians wouldn’t tax it if they could figure out a way to, though), since most of those kids aren’t a drain on “the system”.

Of course, we know that many illegals/daily workers ARE getting lots of benefits for no contribution to the system….

Yeah, THAT I have a problem with.

Are you able to deduct that as a cost of doing business?

  26. Teresa in Fort Worth, TX April 2, 2011 at 12:55 pm #

…our booming population pays next to nothing for real estate taxes…

I don’t think those taxes can be used for transportation costs (construction, anyway).

I like our low real estate taxes!

  27. Dick April 2, 2011 at 1:02 pm #

    You’re kidding, right?

Are you able to deduct that as a cost of doing business?
    30% anyway.

Aggie – We took a young airman on a deployment to Roosevelt Roads back in the day. He actually thought that Puerto Rico = Portuguese. He was from Kentucky and it was his first time away from home.

I was called on at breakfast this morning to elaborate on the general welfare clause, and what the Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers had to say about it.

Not what I expected at a church men’s breakfast.

  36. LC Aggie Sith April 2, 2011 at 2:35 pm #

Not something I would expect there either, BisW.

    Why were they asking?

  37. PattyAnn April 2, 2011 at 2:41 pm #

“I don’t think those taxes can be used for transportation costs ” I know 🙂 I just took a higher step on my soapbox.

Damn, Aggie, that means you and LauraW aren’t cousins?

  38. Blackiswhite, Imperial Consigliere April 2, 2011 at 2:41 pm #

One of the guys was talking about his daughters, and their “ideas” about how it was the government’s job to take care of them.

The pastor looked at me, and asked if that was a reasonable interpretation of the General Welfare clause.

  39. LC Aggie Sith April 2, 2011 at 2:45 pm #

that means you and LauraW aren’t cousins?

    Heh!

their “ideas” about how it was the government’s job to take care of them.
