Glad to see Dick back. Dick, how many pounds of bacon did you cook at the Texas meetup? 10?

  2. Dick February 7, 2011 at 8:49 am #

I think it was ten. How many Obama waffles did you make?

And, why am I not logged in? I hate it when I’m not logged in.

Expect a nice long list of complaints from me today.

The day was a mess with nothing but driving all over the city. Most job locations are mudholes and I’ll have to let them dry out so I don’t tear up lawns. I’ll try again tomorrow.

Only if you consider the perfect woman to have an amply stocked bar, and cooks barefoot.

  33. roamingfirehydrant February 7, 2011 at 5:07 pm #

Aggie, I actually left work early. Very tired today, and tired of dealing with some people.

I make and repair rosaries, usually for free. Word gets around that I repair them, so a lady from church brought me one that had a couple of broken beads and a lousy previous repair. She. Is. Bugging. The. Everloving. Shit. out of me over it, including phone calls at home and at work. Lady, I’m going to the trouble of matching the beads so you can’t tell it’s been repaired, it’s going to take a little while. And I’m doing it for FREE.

  34. Dick February 7, 2011 at 5:10 pm #

Roamy, send it back to her and tell her to be a fucking Baptist.

  43. roamingfirehydrant February 7, 2011 at 5:20 pm #

If I hadn’t already spent the money on ordering beads for this lady’s rosary, I would give it back to her.

Aggie, I will happily repair your mom’s rosary for you. I fixed one from Rome that a lady caught with the vacuum cleaner. The only one I haven’t been able to repair was one from the 1870’s where the corpus came off the crucifix. You can’t find a spare part for that, I wasn’t going to destroy a crucifix to repair that one, and they didn’t want a substitute.

  44. LC Aggie Sith February 7, 2011 at 5:22 pm #

Thanks, Roamy. I will ask her 🙂

DC may not be worth it for casualties, since we despise that city.

LA…maybe, since it has only been hit by the Wrath of God.

But if you were a terrorist, looking to not only have casualties, but also break that which makes us patriotic and American, what would you hit?

So, I read this piece on Detroit today. It’s a bit dated (Dec 2008), but, if anything, the city has only deteriorated since the article was written. It’s an engrossing read:

    http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/015/945aynyk.asp?page=1

  111. beasn February 8, 2011 at 11:57 am #

So a dear friend has a dilemma. Her husband has worked many years for the same company, 24/7/365. She has complained over the years that he never turns it off, has warned that it will come to no good end. About 5 years ago, he started taking sleep aids.
Every year, at this time, release dates/deadlines, come due and each year the stress gets worse. He seems to see every problem and fire as his and his alone. He cannot focus on one fire at a time because he sees this one going off over there and another over there. He thinks himself a dumbass because he ‘works with very smart and talented and dedicated people’. They work 11 hour days, every day, and he sees these fires going off caused by his inattention and dumbassery.
He has hit ‘the wall’ and wants to walk away. In this economy. With a mortgage and the knowledge that he could blow through every dime of his savings – of which the past couple of years has only begun to really start saving a decent amount. Not to mention the company has the son on a trail basis.
He isn’t sleeping – thinking of work – is dry heaving -thinking of work. Says it’s too hard to just focus on one thing at a time at the same time says he can’t fix all the problems – does acknowledge the company has downsized and is trying to squeeze blood out of turnips – and seems to be foggy all the time.
Does she ‘give him permission’, knowing in the worst case scenario he may be branded unemployable or not be able to find another decent job, that they blow through their savings, no insurance, and have to ‘downsize’ the home?

Who the hell am I kidding, you know it’s me and I have noone to ask for advice. How sad is that? He has gone to his family and they said that they have his back but I want to cry because that is my worst nightmare – to have to depend on anyone. And I know if he ‘walks’, the new set of problems will be just as horrible, if not worse, on him. But I can’t get him or he refuses to change his behavior. (another problem he has – which he doesn’t see as a problem is that he is too nice – his worldview is that he sees the good in everybody – noone could possibly be slacking at his job elevation, everyone works just as hard or harder than him. I see the world the opposite way. No matter how high you go up the economic/education ladder, you will find the same types of folks and behaviors – probably more so.)

    ??

  112. LC Aggie Sith February 8, 2011 at 12:02 pm #

Wow, Jazz…that’s a heartbreaking story of that city.

  113. PattyAnn February 8, 2011 at 12:05 pm #

    *hugs Beasn

I wish there was a way to make him not stress out. If he’s ready to pitch it, would he be open to going to counseling? Having someone to talk you (and I’m sure he vents to you but doesn’t “talk” to you because he doesn’t want to worry you any more than he is) would probably help him.
I’m sorry, sweetie. Hope it changes for the better.

  114. Blackiswhite, Imperial Consigliere February 8, 2011 at 12:09 pm #

    Beasn,

A real vaction can at least buy him some mental breathing room, but therapy is probably the only thing short of a second or third heart attack that will change his behavior. Nothing like that quadruple bypass to make someone realize that it really wasn’t important to be there on Saturday night making sure that all those TPS reports have coversheets.

I’m dealing with some similar issues with Mrs. BiW, but I expect that if her boss delegates yet one more of her own tasks to someone else, the jail time that Mrs. BiW will get for burying her pencil in her boss’s eye will do a lot to melt away the workplace stress.

Wow, Jazz…that’s a heartbreaking story of that city.

    Flint’s story is even worse…if that’s possible.

Beasn, I am so sorry to hear about your hubby’s distress. I was in a similar situation as well, back before I was married. I felt I had to fix all the problems that arose because the mgmt was too busy with “important stuff”. I saw the good in everyone, still do, but back then it was to the point of me being a doormat to the people I worked for. And that is what he is right now. I have a feeling mgmt takes advantage of your hubby, because he can’t say no, either.

I had to learn to break that cycle. It took me YEARS to do that. I’m still learning it. But one thing I did notice is, that fires do tend to put themselves out if you leave them to be. One time I was so exhausted from trying to reconcile the gross margin to inventory on hand, that I just snapped. I broke the phone!! And it felt GOOD. And that’s when I realized that this particular fire was being fed by me. Your hubby is doing the same thing. He is feeding the fires. Sleep aids will only make it worse, too.

I know he wants to quit, and maybe it would do him good, but I think if he were to quit, guilt would settle in. He has to learn that this situation was 1) none of his making, and 2) not his whole responsibility. He should let the fires go, and show people he has limits. Then they will be forced to pick up the slack. I wish I could give you better advice, advice he would take.

Or, you could hog-tie him for a few days, call him in sick, and see what happens.

Beans, your husband needs a vacation STAT. My husband gets stressed, but when he’s home he’s OUT. He does do work sometimes (and it always shows with his increased stress level at home) … but the best thing he has learned to do is to turn it off.
He HAS to learn how to do that. HAS to.

He NO longer talks to me about work. Not that I don’t want to know, but it’s that less time he spends thinking about it. Makes home more off limits from that stuff.

He did tell me some funny/ not so funny work stories over the weekend . Our accountant is getting baked every day at lunchtime. Random drug tests are this week.

    Flint’s story is even worse…if that’s possible.

Banana 101.5 has a commerical teaser: Flint, where finding a job is just about as hard as finding a virgin.

I have told him all those things and he says ‘I know, I know, I know’.

He asked today, ‘Will you let me quit?’

I say, ‘If it is that bad, the company’s process being teh suck, I’d rather they fire you. At least then, there will be some income while you look for other work – for 3 years.’

Then I asked,’Can you not, for me, just focus on one thing today’. I have never before asked him to do something for me besides pick up milk or bread.

He says, ‘I know I know’. Then went and threw up his breakfast.

I tell him it’s not worth it, he is just a number to the company, so he needs to find a balance for his own health. And if he is at ‘that point’ then he has nothing to lose by just focusing on one task and leaving the other fires for someone else to deal with. The f*cking company has God knows how many employees throughout the world. Too bad we aren’t Europeans, by law, they’d have to jump through hoops to even consider letting him go.

    Thanks for letting me vent.

Thing is, I’m dealing with something similar at my job. The husband and I have similar work ethics. But I have learned rather quickly that there is no way in hell that I can do it all so I focus on what is most important, at the moment, and the rest someone else can deal with. It bothers me that shit isn’t getting done, either because of lack of manpower or slackers or those who don’t work as fast or have the same skill, but one person can only do so much. The rest is on the company.

Oh, and he has done therapy last year. He has added to his stress by beating himself up over the fact that he hasn’t done a damned thing as regards to changing his tactics/behaviors.

Too bad the real estate market is in the toilet. We paid for Jr’s first year of college with his dabbling in it, of which he really likes.

Beasn, he’s hearing but not listening. And if he is trying to leave the job, better that he get fired and gets some benefits than to walk away with nothing.

Not to go TiFW, but has does he work out at all?

Working out – 45 min to yourself, with the therapy of music blasting in your ears (whatever music thrills you) is so good for you.

I personally am not a big “therapy” person. I think we all KNOW the answers. Therapy only works if the personality type is that who will listen to strangers versus listening to 1) yourself or 2) those who know you.
